Journey to the best health of my life (yes, the journey includes olives)

Insults at the gym

Yes, you read that right. Insults at the gym.  I was at the gym on Saturday – working my butt off as always.  Out of nowhere I heard two 20-something year old guys making fun of me (loudly!).  “Really?!” I thought.

So I went up to them and gave them a piece of my mind.  This is, in a nutshell, what I said:

“Lets get this straight.  Yes, I’m overweight, but as you can see I’m working my hardest to shift the weight.  I can almost guarantee that my diet is better than yours, and I’m probably stronger than you too.  I have struggled my whole life with my weight.  It’s people like you that made me scared to come to the gym in the first place.  Now people like you just make me angry.  Angry because you may stop someone coming to the gym.  The gym is where I come to get healthy.  I’m working out and I’m sweating.  I feel really good about myself when I’m here.  What exactly gives you to the right to make fun of anyone, let alone someone that you can see is actively trying to be the best version of themselves?”

Needless to say they were lost for words!

I complained about them, and their membership has been suspended for a month.  I would have preferred their membership to be revoked.  However, I hope that they will think twice next time.  I don’t have any respect for either of them right now, but I like to think that people can change.  Maybe what I said will have a positive influence.

If you are scared to go to the gym please do not let this article fuel your fear!  I love going to the gym.  Most people at the gym are great (like this guy) and so supportive.  I have made so many friends there and find support from strangers all the time.  It is generally a great environment to be in.  Additionally, my gym took my concerns about these 2 members seriously.  That means more to me than words can express.

I’m a 30-something female who’s striving to be the healthiest woman I can be through diet and exercise. In early 2013 I was introduced to the world of Paleo. I completed Whole30 and had fantastic results. I had finally found something that worked for me! My blog is a jumble of my thoughts as I take the journey through my life. Somewhere for me to unleash my views, my challenges, my failures and my successes (hopefully!).

  1. Good on you! It’s people like this who go to the gym stop other people from joining! Well done for standing up for yourself.

  2. What jerks! The dirty looks are bad enough, but when people get brazen enough to verbally insult you, then it’s way over the line.

  3. I am so proud of you for standing up for yourself!! Keep working hard!! xo

  4. This is exactly why I’m so hesitant to go the gym. 😦

    • Please please please don’t let this make you more hesitant to go. I was taken to the gym kicking and screaming (ready my post ‘to exercise or not to exercise…’). However, it was the best thing I ever did. I have met so many great people who have all been so encouraging. I’ve made friends that are leading, or striving for, a healthier lifestyle. They are part of my support network now. On top of that I started exercising regularly, have got healthier and stronger and feel so great. Most people at the gym are wonderful! In addition, most people who are there to work out do just that – they don’t notice you – they are in their zone. So please give it a shot!

  5. Ignore those idiots with extreme prejudice. They’re the guys who do nothing but criticize, and most of the hardcore guys are laughing at THEM.
